Johann Strauss II

1825-1899

Known as the “The Waltz King” Johann Strauss II composed his beautiful The Blue Danube in 1867. A year later he wrote Tales from the Vienna Woods. Strauss and generations of Viennese have enjoyed walking the lovely woods bordering their city. In 2005 UNESCO designated the Vienna Woods a Biosphere Reserve.

New Year’s Eve would not be the same without the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s concert and the waltzes of Johann Strauss. As George and Ira Gershwin wrote in their song “By Strauss.”

“When I want a melody

Lilting through the house

Then I want a melody

By Strauss”
